It’s a Kong Off, baby!

dkflamingbarrel

This is so sweet.  I love Donkey Kong – it’s always been my favorite game, and the recent resurgence it has been receiving due to the King of Kong movie and the highly-publicized high score volleys between Steve Wiebe, Billy Mitchell and Hank Chien have just made being a DK fan all that much better.

With the recent DK world’s high score record being reclaimed by Chien, it appears that Richie Knucklez is going to host an event that should allow these guys (along with other aspiring record holders) to battle it out for two days (March 19th and 20th, 2011) at his arcade in Flemington, NJ with the hopes of crowning a new world champion.

I really, really wish I could attend this.  My DK game is so bad right now, I wouldn’t even be able to hold a candle to any of the 10 competitors at the Kong Off.  I might even be turned away at the door if I had to meet a minimum scoring level. 😉

I’d really like to attend for the atmosphere, the sounds and the chance to witness these great players in one location and to be able to rub elbows a bit and just talk to the guys and get their take on the event and classic gaming in current times.

If you are planning on going, please post a comment.  I’d love to hear from some folks that might be planning on attending the event.

@Whitney Roberts Sure. High Score is showing on the Documentary channel for those who have Dish or Direct TV.
    OR… http://www.hulu.com/highscore
Or… Link to the DVD house selling the film from http://www.highscoremovie.com
But this was not to be a plug for the 5 year old film, it was to congratulate Eric on a great job. He is one, of few, to keep an eye on as a possible new Kong record holder. Go Eric.
PS… Did I mention his girlfriend is beautiful?!!!

Agreed. I was immediately curious about the movie – just wanted to find out some more about it. Thanks for the info.

Definite congrats go to Eric, Hank, Steve, etc. al. on the Kong Off for sure. They are all definitely a ‘level best’ in competitive DK.

      What was Richie’s arcade like?

Eric was the first with a Kill Screen. He set the bar and had the others needing to catch up. His girlfriend, Christine, was such a sweet person to meet as well as being extremely beautiful to look at. It was the first time I got to meet Eric – GREAT guy.

It sounds like you had a really good time at the event! I bet it was neat being able to meet all the contestants. Definite congrats to Eric for getting that 1st killscreen.

I just checked out your site – I’m going to check your movie out. It’s the 1st time I’ve heard of such, but will enjoy watching it. Do you know if it’s going to be aired on TV anytime this year?

      Thanks,
      Whitney

      Eric,

Thanks a lot for the good word regarding the site. I wish I could make it, but it won’t be a possibility this time around. I’ll be keeping close tabs on the proceedings though. Good luck!
